Take a black Sharpie marker and make a smiley face on one of your child's favorite balls. Create a game of affirmations. With every toss (or roll), say an affirmation, and have your child repeat it as they toss or roll the ball back to you. Suggestions include, "I am smart," "I am kind," "I am awesome," and "I care." Strike an equal balance between self-esteem builders and compassionate mantras. Once your child catches on ask them to be the lead.
Have your child draw one continuous line overlapping, however they're inspired. Then, with whatever medium is available (e.g., crayon, paint, or chalk), have your child shade in the different areas. You may have a true masterpiece to frame and display.
Encourage your child to write a story and to illustrate it, using pop-up art. This can be done simply by taping or gluing the paper to the illustrated page.
For this activity you will need the following:
Broken crayon pieces of multiple colors
Silicone baking cups, which are available at craft stores (these you will only use for crayon making)
A cookie sheet
Preheat oven to 300°. With your child, peel the paper off the broken crayons you’ve accumulated. Place the silicone cups on the cookie sheet, then fill the cups about 1/3 of the way up with the broken pieces of crayon. Be certain that no paper remains on the crayon pieces, and be careful not to drop any crayon pieces onto the cookie sheet.
Bake in oven for approximately 8-10 minutes, until the pieces have melted. Very carefully remove the cookie sheet, so that the hot wax does not spill. Let the new crayons cool in a safe place for 20 minutes. Carefully remove the new multi-colored crayons from the silicone cups, and enjoy coloring with your creations. These can make great gifts too!
Ask your child pick a favorite song and encourage him or her to choreograph a dance to it. Then you pick your favorite song and do the same. Sing and dance like crazy!
